Lasting power of attorney (LPA)

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document under which the donor gives power to the attorney to make decisions on the donor's behalf, usually after the donor has lost mental capacity. An LPA is the most common type of power of attorney in England and Wales.

There are two types of LPA, and the donor can choose to make just one or both:

    •ÌýÌýÌýÌý property and financial affairs LPA—this allows the attorney(s) to make decisions about the donor's property and financial affairs, including operating bank accounts, buying/selling of the donor's house and other assets, dealing with the donor's tax affairs, claiming/receiving benefits and pension payments, and paying household,
