Grievous bodily harm definition

What does Grievous bodily harm mean?

Malicious wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm with or without a weapon is an offence.

Whether or not harm amounts to 'grievous bodily harm' is a matter of degree and involves looking at the totality of the injuries and possibly the characteristics of the victim (eg what is grievous bodily harm for a child might not be so for an adult). The words bear their ordinary meaning and it is not always necessary to look for 'really' serious bodily harm, though this is commonly included in the definition. Psychiatric injury can amount to grievous bodily harm. 'Inflicting' does not imply an 'assault' and therefore the injury need not be caused by fear of imminent personal attack.
